Book Review: Dear Bob

Dear Bob and Love Jude by Annie Porthouse. Published by Scripture Union

This is an absolute must if you are a student who likes a good read. Imagine that Bridget Jones is only 18, is a Christian and has just started University. Jude Singleton is this character and Dear Bob is her diary of life as a Christian fresher who is no longer sure if God exists after a life time of church and youth groups. Bob is her fictional future Super Spiritual Christian husband and she’s putting as much effort in to finding the real Bob as she is into finding the meaning of life! The sequel, Love Jude, picks up the story just in time for Spring Harvest (no Student Evolution I’m afraid!) and takes us to Christmas of her second year, by which time she has swapped the waterpoof curtains of halls for a dodgy shower in a student house.

Annie Porthouse didn’t go to university herself, but she consulted many people who have in the process of writing the books. Interestingly one of these people was her husband who spent two years at little old Loughborough! Maybe this is why I found the descriptions of hall life rang so true for me. Although the book will definitely appeal to students, it is also fantastic for anyone having a faith crisis at anytime in life. Be warned though - if you’re having a quarter-life/post-graduation crisis, it will make you long irrationally for the waterproof curtains and dodgy showers of student life!

Both books are available from the OH Library. If you like them, check out www.dearbob.com. It includes bible studies which address the themes in the book, comments from readers and advice on writing.
