Incubate Arts: Morocco 2005
"Even
though we come from two different countries, we have different
cultures, different traditions, we speak Arabic, the children speak
Berber, you speak English, we have different religions and beliefs...
but this week we have been family"The headmistress at the girls primary school in Morocco summed up the atmosphere of our week there beautifully. We were all blown away by the incredible hospitality that is central to Moroccan culture. Each day as we taught art workshops at the school, the teachers laid out a lavish 'second breakfast' consisting of Moroccan pancakes, biscuits, bread, cakes and mint tea.
We had two wonderful weeks teaching art to about 700 children living in this small Muslim market town in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Nine artists from the Church of Loughborough (and Incubate) took part in the project, and we each found that the smiles of the children as they had the opportunity to be creative, were well worth the journey. We also discovered how it felt to be the 'pied piper', as we walked
home each day through the dusty streets, with groups of chattering children following behind us.It was great to return to the town after only 9 months, to strengthen friendships that were started last summer, and to demonstrate our commitment to the place. It was also inspiring to see how things had developed for Gill (centre manager, Morocco) as a result of the project last year.
Due to the fact that art in schools seems to be fairly unheard of in Morocco, we had visits from a minister
of education, president of the PTA, a local government official and a
minister of the interior, who expressed his appreciation to us and his
desire for Gill to run further projects to meet the needs of the town.
We felt amazingly welcomed by the local community, and in our own ways we were each inspired as artists by this fresh cultural experience of Morocco.
