A team of 12 from Loughborough are heading off for 4 weeks short term mission to work with CMS in three projects in North West India. We will be in India over July and August and whilst there we intend to be learning about the culture, put ourselves in positions where we can all be challenged & therefore developed and serving the projects to the best of our abilities.

To track our progress please visit our blog.

CMS

Church Mission Society are a well established mission agency, this voluntary organisation was founded in 1799, CMS has attracted upwards of nine thousand men and women to serve as mission partners during its 200-year history.

Why short term mission?

Here’s a helpful quote taken from the CMS website regarding the nature of short-term mission trips.

"Our mission is to encourage the church in its mission and to allow you to discover what it means to be a part of a worldwide family. On a short-term trip you can’t change the world, but the experience will certainly change you."

Why go to India?

India remains one of the most culturally rich countries in the world. There is an estimated 4635 distinct people groups within India’s 1 billion population. A significant number of the world’s 6880 unreached people groups reside in this fascinating and fast growing nation. It has a colourful history, much of which has been preserved in its people, traditions, architecture and fantastic atmosphere. We believe God has great plans for this blossoming country and want to be a part of his mission there!

India is also a country of limited resources and finite opportunities. People have flooded into its cities from surrounding villages over the past fifty years in an attempt to find employment and improve the lives of themselves and their families.

The result in Delhi, where the team will be based for part of the trip has seen a swelling of its population from 2 million in 1947 to over 13 million today. The government has been unable to meet the infrastructure and social challenges that have arisen from this growth, and the Shantytowns have emerged in response.

The projects….

United Christian Institue, Jalandhar

UCI was set up to educate young children, particularly from rural and underprivileged backgrounds. The institute now is made up of a number of areas including the United Christian Senior Secondary School for Boys; the United Christian High School for Girls; the vocational training wing; the Industrial Training Centre and the United Christian Primary School.

Delhi Brotherhood, Delhi

The Brotherhood works a slum area of Delhi with the deprived and underprivileged communities who live there. Its mission is to inspire and motivate the people to realise their human dignity and develop their own capacity to solve their own problems. It looks to work for the social and economic development of the people by providing whatever practical help they need in the form of information, advice, capacity building, organisation, training and fundraising.

ASHA, Delhi

Like the Brotherhood, ASHA is a project working in a slum area of Delhi. Its mission is the improvement of the lives of slum dwellers in Delhi through community and health development. It achieves this through the initiation of long-term sustainable projects that confront and solve the practical and social problems faced by those living within these communities.

Prayer points...

  • That God would help us settle into the culture quickly
  • That God will help us creatively as we lead lessons and workshops
  • For good health of all team members & safety in travel
  • That God will really speak to each of the team and we can all have a greater revelation of His love for all people.
  • That we might be able to bless the people we meet and work alongside and that we might be able to encourage them in their work.
