Boys in the pub, girls in the library?
Students at British Universities are a bunch of slackers compared to their German and Portuguese counterparts according to the results of the latest survey. The average student at a British Uni gets 14 hours per week of teaching time in their first two years, as well as 12½ hours p.w. private study. That gives an average of 26.7 hours per week - well under the German total of 35 hours a week, and way, way below the Portuguese average of 40 hours a week.
The report is the work of the Higher Education Policy Institute whose director also claims that girls tend to work harder than boys. "Boys are down the pub and the girls are in the library".
The question is, how should Christian students respond? By going with the flow and enjoying the freedom? By using the extra time for prayer and reaching out? Or by putting in extra hours of study to honour God? However you respond it's best to make sure you do so intentionally and having got God's perspective on it. The freedom you get at uni is just too good to waste.
