Open Heaven's 15 year Celebration
Open Heaven had its 15-year birthday party on a week last Saturday, and
boy did we celebrate - birthday cake and all!
The planning team had been meeting since January, over copious amounts
of tea. Dreaming and scheming, working out how Open Heaven could best celebrate
its birthday.
A semi torrential downpour during set-up worried us all, especially the hog-roast caterers, but you only have to look at the pictures prove that absolutely nothing put a dampener on our birthday.
The day bought an eclectic mix of people from past and
present, creating a celebration of a church that has been growing and thriving.
It was exciting to see past Open Heaveners travel from afar, bringing with them
babies and spouses.
We were greeted by the smell of a delicious hog-roast, and
serenaded throughout the day by Loughborough’s own swing band. People were
entertained by a huge amount of games, including volleyball, football and a
selection of larger than life games that made one feel like a Borrower.
A caption competition for photos from the past and present provided a lot of laughs, which was almost as funny as the screens which flicked through Open Heaven’s photographic archives. Open Heaven’s old faithfuls laughed as they were reminded of what they had been up to during their years as students, and the newer lot ridiculed their old hairstyles and fashion sense.
The bouncy castle, as I am sure you can see from the photos, provided a huge amount of entertainment for the young and the old..er. We bounced the day away - with only one trip to the hospital! Children got their faces painted and splashed around in the paddling pool after enjoying their own party dinner of smiley faces and sausage rolls.
Many commented on how touching it was to see loads of people
from Open Heaven past and present get together, as well as hearing Ness talking
about our history. God’s involvement was
so obviously present throughout.
If there is one thing Open Heaven does very well, it is throwing a good party. As the birthday cake came out, and Amelie enthusiastically blew out the candles, one could only think about what Open Heaven had meant to God, the university and their own lives. What a credit to a loving, people-orientated church.
