Luxuries for Life

During Lent (17th Feb – 27th March) Open Heaven is taking on the Simplify challenge.

The idea is to simplify our lives, so that others can simply live...

This year we are setting different 3 challenges for Luxuries for Life.

Option A - Eat for £1 a day, it might mean a diet of mainly beans and rice, porridge and water, like many people have in the developing world. You might want to do this as a family or household. And the money you save, you give away. (Tip - buy a big bag of rice or pasta and then add beans or veg for each meal. Eggs and porridge are also cheap foods that fill you up and provide protein. Search for websites where people have cooked for $1 a day)

Option B - Live on the equivalent of benefits. After rent and bills, you have £5 a day to cover your food, travel, social activities and other personal expenses. And the money you save, you give away.

(Tip - Try taking out cash out at the beginning of each week and not using any cards  i.e. for option B, you’ve got £35 a week.)

Option C - Give up luxuries. How about not eating meat, drinking alcohol, driving your car, buying clothes etc. And the money you save, you give away.

The money that is collected from Luxuries for Life will be given to Haiti Disaster Relief and Project 5000 (working with homeless people) in Loughborough.

Over 80% of humanity lives on less than £5 a day, and over 20% of the world’s population lives on less than 50p a day.
