The Olympics are Coming!

The world’s premier sporting event - the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics is coming to the UK!

It’s not only coming to the UK but Loughborough will be hosting Team GB and the Japanese team in their preparation for the games. This is a once in a lifetime experience and an amazing opportunity for churches to be at the heart of the celebrations.

10,000 athletes from 205 different counties will be taking part.

The Loughborough Churches Partnership (about 20 churches working together) have been working together to find ways to celebrate and make the most of this amazing opportunity. There are currently seven different events that people can get involved with.

Olympic School’s Project: Throughout the summer term teams will be going into schools running an inter-school Olympic quiz’s, Olympic themed assemblies and Question and Answer RE lessons.

Torch Relay: The Olympic torch will be coming through Loughborough on Tuesday 3rd July. We have talked to the council about helping with stewarding and street entertainment as people wait for the torch.

Opening Ceremony: The council are planning an opening ceremony event on Friday 27th July in the Market Place which will include turning on a massive screen that will be up for the 2 weeks of the Olympics. As churches we have offered to steward and help in any other way we can.

Picnic in the Park: We have a great opportunity to partner with Charnwood Arts to put on this brilliant community festival. It’s on Tuesday 5th June and is a day which brings people together, celebrates local talent and helps people enjoy and be proud of the town they live in. There are loads of things going on including music, comedy, rides, dance, art, sport, food and local craft.

Christians in Sport Quiz: On Saturday 28th July there’s going to be a large scale sports quiz that will include food and a short testimony from a well known Christian sports person.

Community Street Party: On the 5th August 2012 the churches are planning on having a big community street party in the market place. They’ll be a BBQ and a stage with live music and other entertainment.

Fusion Olympics: Fusion have partnered with More Than Gold to send as many students from across the country, in mission teams with your church, to hit the Capital and serve the Games. You will get partnered with local London churches, hit the streets to do mission and party into the night on the buzzing streets of the city, gripped with Olympic fever. http://www.fusion.uk.com/students/more-than-gold
