News from Surge

Hi everyone, just wanted to update you on how things are going.

Well I find myself writing this email feeling I am in a period of extreme blessings. I don’t normally say this but things are going so well, I’m enjoying just about every minute of Madrid!  Obviously there are tough times but at this moment I feel like I am being favoured like a Daniel or Joseph.  Thanks in no small way to you lot, without your prayers I would have burned out by now.

First of all with school, for the first time I’m loving the teaching, I know it is early days but th e kids seem so nice, they are respectful and a lot of fun, totally unlike some of my experiences in England. (Funnily a lot of the other new teachers are hating it, of course the school has all the normal problems).

As I was employed so late they couldn’t fill my timetable so I have loads of free periods!!! They sa y I will be used more for cover but that’s not a big problem, the kids also do a lot of swimming and there is a special instructor for that so again more frees!! On top of that even the Spanish say the weather is unusually hot so I’m also getting an ace suntan!!

The best things have been the amazing opportunities I have had to preach the gospel.  I’m teaching some year 8’s medieval history, boring as, but a major part of it is the medieval church.  On the first day Ii got the kids to brainstorm what they thought God was like, then we looked at what people in the middle ages thought God was like, ie a judge, book keeper, prosecutor and then I read them Luke 15 about the lost, coin, sheep and lost son, after this I then did a preach titled the dancing father that i had heard Gerald Coates preach while I was with him in USA. Basically telling them that God was a partying God who loved them like a dad!! They listened intently and at the end of the lesson a girl put her hand up and asked me to clarify just exactly how she could go to heaven!!! I was so shocked at how easy it had been I probably didn’t push as far as I could have.  Since then every lesson I have had I have been able to put in some radical Jesus stuff and start to ask questions of the religious Christianity they are so used to in Spain. Please can you make this a real prayer focus, I know I’m on slightly dodgy ground being so blatant and also I still need to teach them the boring medieval history stuff. I see the devil would want to attack here but also realise that when God wants to move he will and in power!

Apart from that I’ve joined a rugby club, bit of a funny story really but they are one of the best teams in Spain, with a lot of internationals from different countries like Argentina, Spain, Ukraine etc, you have to pay to watch them. Anyway someone got in contact with them and told them I was some ace player from England!!! Oh dear, they treated me like Johnny Wilkinson but then when I went to training they realised I was absolute kak!! Still it has been a good way to meet some Spanish guys, although it is a big time commitment I need to decide where I sow into as the rugby would take up my whole free time and I’m not sure I’m up for that. So please pray for wisdom and favour.

This Tuesday I will go and watch Real Madrid play for the first time, one of the kids in school also knows Rafael Benitez so I might try and get some Liverpool stash!!!  I am also going to meet up with a 24/7 prayer contact on Sunday, this will be my first meeting with a Christian since I’ve been here, so am looking forward to that.

Please keep praying for me

Love Surge

The school I am at has a website so if you are really interested you can find out more about where I am working.
