The story of Open Heaven goes back over twenty years ago to Loughborough University campus. Ness Wilson arrived in Towers Hall as a fresher, and found that the second and third year Christians had been praying specifically for ten 'fired up freshers'. Ness was one of those ten. As they all prayed passionately for their friends in Towers Hall, the numbers of students following Jesus trebled by the end of the first term.
This young group of students graduated, and taking God seriously, considered the possibility of staying in Loughborough to start a Church. They were encouraged by a significant prophetic word about ‘a Church set up by young people for young people in the Midlands’. Open Heaven has since become the reality of an extraordinary God at work in the lives of ordinary people.
Open Heaven now has two expressions; our OH1 gathering for 18-30’s meets on Sunday in Room 1, one of the biggest rooms at Loughborough’s Student’s Union. Our OH2 gathering, which is intentionally children and family friendly, meets on Sunday at the St Peter’s Centre, which is shared with our friends from Elim, another congregation in the town.
Over 1,300 people have been a part of Open Heaven in the last twenty years and each one is part of the family, having been encouraged and equipped for their lives in or beyond Loughborough. Open Heaven is continuing to grow and step into more of what God’s story is for us. Part of this is seeing how events, activities and projects at the St Peter’s Centre are serving and impacting the local community. We are also sending more Church planting teams to start new Church communities.
